As I was driving one day, my eyes were drawn to what appeared to be a small brown bag in the road. As I approached, I realized what had looked like litter at a distance was really a tiny kitten. I stopped and picked him up – the kitten, no bigger than my palm and his eyes still closed, was in rough shape with many health challenges. I set off for the veterinarian, who guessed that he was possibly the runt of his litter or possibly his mother had been killed. Rather than place the kitten in a shelter, I decided to adopt Kgee.
Kgee possessed a unique personality and sweet disposition. Routinely, people who got to know him would ask if they could adopt him, but of course I always said no. Because of the early loss of his mother, Kgee came to view me as a substitute guardian and developed a unique attachment to me. As an example, I was with Kgee in my front yard one day where there was another cat present as I started to pet the cat it hissed at me at which time, Kgee ran over and jumped on the cat. This was from a cat that was afraid of his own shadow.
After many years, I lost Kgee to cancer. As I remembered his life and the joy he brought to my family, I thought about the ‘what if.’ What if I hadn’t found Kgee? What if I would have missed out of this opportunity. I asked myself, ‘how many other animals and potential owners are missing the opportunity of their Kgee?’ Out of those thoughts I decided to name this non-profit organization Kgee’s Gift, a great way to honor the Gift of Kgee’s life.
